We are so excited to announce that today is the Grand Opening of Kamalani’s Inclusive Playground on Kauai! The playground has been a high-priority project for Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami and his administration since November 2021, and we are so honored to have been a part of such a monumental project for the Kauai community.
In honor of the playground’s opening, here are 5 Things to Know about the Kamalani Inclusive Playground:
- The playground is specifically designed for keiki with developmental disabilities. Meaning, from start to finish, the playground has been created to support children of all abilities with their development.
- It is the first inclusive playground on Kauai, and we plan on making sure it isn’t the last.
- The play space includes features that engage all children’s physical, social, emotional, sensory, communication, and cognitive skills. Yup, all of those benefits are found in one park.
- The playground allows children to swing, spin, slide, and practice balancing, taking full advantage of InspiredPlay’s 6×6 Play Value Matrix.
- The Leadership Kauai’s class of 2022 participated in the development of the project with the intention of ensuring all levels of abilities were represented in the design. Parents and students came together with the proposal for an inclusive park that supported their entire community, advocating for their family and friends who often experienced feeling left out of playground activities.
